Coastlands Community Church is a Bible-believing church. We understand that there are a great many groups who teach from the Bible but perhaps add their own twist or omit parts that are unpopular.
Because we believe the Bible is inspired by God and authoritative for all humanity, we commit to teach what the Bible teaches directly without watering down the message.
"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." -2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)
RULES FOR HEALTHY BIBLE STUDY
ONE INTERPRETATION
Each passage of scripture was written by a person (under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit). Like all communication, the author had a message they wished to convey to an audience. By proper study, we can learn the meaning of the passage as it was intended. There is one interpretation, the correct one, but many applications.
EXEGESIS
Similar to our first rule, it is important to avoid projecting your own meaning onto the text. This helps us avoid misrepresenting what the Bible says, which we should take very seriously. By careful analysis of the text, a student of the Bible can properly understand and apply what the Bible teaches as intended.
CONTEXT
The Bible is an old document. Some sections could be over 3500 years old. In addition, there are many authors and literary genres contained within it. So, it is natural that some portions may be difficult or foreign to readers. But, with careful study, a student of the Bible can learn the background and context of each portion that can shed light on the meaning.
SELF INTERPRETING
We like to say "the Bible interprets the Bible." The Bible references itself over 60,000 times in its many passages. And, each passage has a meaning that can best be understood within its immediate context or other sections of the Bible. Therefore the Bible remains its own best tool for understanding its meaning.
THE GOSPEL
The Bible is cumulatively a narrative that spans from the creation of the universe to the future end of all history. It explains why humans are so broken (or fallen) and how we are separated from God. It lays out the ultimate plan: how God sent His perfect representative Jesus Christ to reconcile us back to Him. Knowing this context will help you understand the Bible as a whole.
APPLICATION
The Bible is not just a story about God, it is also the knowledge of how to establish and maintain our intended relationship with God. Therefore, we can study the Bible and learn what God requires of us to know Him personally and live a life that is supremely blessed by God- the way He intended it to be, and to live an eternal life in Heaven with Him.
